The Austrian painter, artist, architect and visionary activist Friedensreich Hundertwasser is one of the greatest soloists in 20th-century art. He and his work are a fascinating compendium of dreams, colors and nature. Born on December 15, 1928, as Friedrich “Fritz” Stowasser in Vienna, he renamed himself Friedensreich Hundertwasser – “sto” means one hundred in Slavic languages. Shaped by growing up under totalitarian National Socialism, freedom and autonomy, resistance to conventions and authorities became guiding factors in his development. Rapidly becoming bored by academic training, he found inspiration and models during numerous trips to Italy, Paris, North Africa and Spain. His idols were Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, Paul Klee and Walter Kampmann. Yet the greatest influence on him was nature itself, whose growth, colors and forms he translated into poetic and dreamlike works.

More than 80 works by Hundertwasser, from the years 1958 to 1999, are now catalogued in the Würth Collection. On the occasion of the 95th birthday of this “prophet of fantasy”, Museum Würth 2 is presenting a monographic show of paintings and prints that let us immerse ourselves in the artist's unique world of form and color.
